Mitte Power Station
The old and new Mitte Power Stations dominate the area by the River Spree with their bulky appearance. The original Berlin-Mitte combined heat and power plant came on stream in 1961, and was long the most important power station supplying East Berlin. Today only part of the huge complex with its numerous extensions is used to generate electricity. The old power station was replaced in 1996 by a new plant next door.
In 2006 the renowned techno club Tresor moved into part of the building. Since 2010 the 100-metre turbine hall has been used for exhibitions and events, including serving as backdrop for concert and theatre performances.
