From outside, the symmetrical Villa Rathenau appears astonishingly plain. Only a small memorial indicates the identity of its famous former occupant. Walther Rathenau took an active part in creating his home on Königsallee. The famous industrialist, author and politician designed the building in 1910 together with Johannes Kraaz, at the time architect at AEG (Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft). Rathenau himself occupied a leading position at AEG and various other companies. He later even received the title of President of AEG. His father was Emil Rathenau, founder of the AEG.
It was not far from this residence that Rathenau was assassinated in 1922 by a right-wing extremist. Today the memorial before his former home recollects his tragic fate.Write a comment
